The Charleston Historic Preservation was founded October 19, 2004 with the approval of Ordinance 04-0-51 by the Charleston City Council.
Charleston’s historic Courthouse Square has been the scene of many renewals and rebuildings since the 1830s. Join the Charleston Historic Preservation Commission in partnership with the Academy of Lifelong Learning for an hour-long architectural walking tour highlighting renewals of the 1870s, 1920s, 1950s, and today. The tour will convene at 10:00am at Ambero Antiques, 514 6th Street, and is free of charge.
The Commission consists of seven (7) voting members, residents of the City of Charleston, appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council. Non-voting, ex-officio members may be appointed to the Commission by the Mayor with the recommendation of the Commission chair. Ex-officio members may serve any number of one-year terms and need not be residents of the city.
The members shall be appointed on the basis of expertise, experience or interest in the area of architectural history, building construction or engineering, finance, historical and architectural preservation, neighborhood associations, or real estate. Current members of the Charleston HPC are:
